This year we are once again inviting over 40 young people between the ages of 17 and 26 from Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Spain and Sweden to our International Summer Workshop at wannseeFORUM in Berlin. Our programme consists of nin days of international youth exchange through artistic workshops and group activities to our topic „Roads to Solidarity“.

What is it about?

After dealing with the issues of freedom and equality in 2017 and 2018, we want to look at another fundamental political and social value this year: solidarity. For the European community of values, solidarity plays a central role: in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, the chapters “Freedoms” and “Equality” are followed by the section “Solidarity”; the European anthem is a symbol of solidarity (“Alle Menschen werden Brüder” / “All humans become brothers”); with the European Solidarity Corps, a new element of European youth policy was recently created; and last but not least, it was the Polish Solidarność movement that contributed to the fall of the Iron Curtain and thus accelerated the process of European unification.

At the same time, a closer look reveals that solidarity is a controversial and ambiguous value. For what exactly solidarity is or should be, who deserves it (and who doesn’t), and where its limits lie, is a matter of dispute throughout Europe.

What is the current state of solidarity in Europe and the world? How do democratic societies deal with the increasing criminalisation of acts of humanity and solidarity, e.g. the rescue of people in distress at sea? And what about intergovernmental solidarity in Europe in times of increasing nationalist resentment?

Our programme

We will be spending nine days in our international group together at wannseeFORUM. Every day we will delve deeper into the topic of „Roads to Solidarity“ in our group and in the artistic workshops of 8 to 10 participants. Under the guidance of professional artists from four different countries you will develop and create an art project using your ideas, research and experiences, which will be publicly presented at the end of the seminar.
Building the artistic groups will take place on the second day of the exchange in the entire group and for every participating country we have reserved 2-3 places in each workshop group.
Apart from the daily workshop programm there will also be shared activities and excursions to the Berlin center. At wannseeFORUM we have a theatre hall, different studios, and beautiful lakeside grounds at our disposal.

Participants from Poland, Spain, Sweden and the Czech Republic are asked to sign up through our partner organisations.
Participants who live in Germany are asked to apply via email to the project leader at wannseeFORUM. Please explain briefly why you would like to participate, and also state your age, your current place of living as well as your English language level.

At a glance: our most important terms and conditions of participation:

  • you are between the ages of 17 to 26 during the time period of the seminar
  • you are interested in our topic for this year’s seminar
  • you would like to develop or discover artistic skills
  • you are interested in working artistically, learning and living with a diverse group
  • you understand and speak some English (everyday level)
  • you have the time to plan a small assignment (e.g. using online exchange) with the rest of the German group before the seminar starts
  • you are interested in developing the communal living of the group
  • No previous artistic skills necessary.

We consider different factors when selecting participants from Germany (for example, age, gender, previous visits etc.) to ensure a diverse mix of people. The deadline to sign up is 10 June 2019 (after that it will only be possible to apply in case there are still places available). A few days later you will receive feedback about your application per email (either a confirmation or a refusal), depending on our number of applicants.

Costs: 130 € (for participants living in Germany) / 100 € (for participants from partner countries), incl. accommodation (4 meals per day) und overnight stay in mostly 2- to 3-bed-rooms with personal bathrooms.
Thanks to our funding through the “Erasmus+ / YOUTH IN ACTION” EU-programme we can reimburse travel costs up to 80-100%.
