Rapping folk bands, embroidery courses on YouTube, urban gardening with heritage potato varieties – all contemporary forms of preserving and developing intangible cultural heritage. UNESCO explains: “Cultural heritage does not end with architectural monuments or collections of cultural artifacts. It also includes traditions and living cultural expressions, such as orally transmitted traditions, performing arts, social customs, rituals and festivals, knowledge and practices relating to nature and the universe, and expertise in traditional craft techniques” (Source: http://www.unesco.de/kultur/immaterielles-kulturerbe/konvention/genese.html).
This year's summer workshop, held from August 23rd to 31st, brought together 37 young art enthusiasts from Poland, Spain, the Czech Republic, and Germany at the wannseeFORUM to artistically discover and explore our intangible cultural heritage. Within four artistic workshops (theater, dance, black and white photography, and costume design), they explored cultural traditions, blended them with new influences, and discovered cultural similarities as well as forgotten roots.
