Is it when the majority decides? Or by drawing lots? Is our school system fair?<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 40 students from the school addressed these and other questions. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robert-jungk-oberschule.de\/\">Robert Jungk School<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fritz-reuter-oberschule.de\/\">Fritz Reuter School<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/feo.schule.de\/\">Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium<\/a> The opportunity arose when they met again this year at the wannseeFORUM for the training seminar for student representatives. This seminar provides a space where (prospective) student representatives and spokespeople can meet and exchange ideas about projects and implementation possibilities within their school student councils. It&#039;s a place where they are encouraged to participate and engage with topics such as politics and democracy. Given the topicality of the subject, the students focused on this year&#039;s overarching theme of &quot;Justice&quot; during the seminar week.<\/p>\n<p>The week began on Monday with an introductory session: Participants explored various questions about justice, such as the difference between equal rights and equal treatment. They also considered what is specifically fair or unfair at their own schools.<\/p>\n<p>They could then choose between the workshops \u201eComic\u201c, \u201eBlack and White Photography\u201c, \u201eDigital Photo Story\u201c and \u201eRap\u201c, in which they artistically explored the justices and injustices at school, in Germany and in their lives as students over five days.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, September 15, 2017, a public presentation finally took place, attended by invited guests from the three participating schools as well as students from the Berggruen Gymnasium, who were participating in their own seminar at the wannseeFORUM concurrently with this student council trip. The presentation room was thus well-filled, and the young people, parents, and teachers eagerly awaited the results from the workshops.<\/p>\n<p>The presentation started with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wannseeforum\/albums\/72157686201661241\">Photo exhibition by the black and white photography group<\/a>, which featured photo series on justice. Differences between professional classes, models of justice, and much more were depicted.<br \/>\nIt continued with a presentation and reading of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wannseeforum\/albums\/72157685442301542\">comics<\/a> \u201e&quot;Amir and the School of Terror&quot;, in which the characters dealt with the issue of justice in school and especially in the student council.<br \/>\nThis was followed by a show of digital photo stories, accompanied by music, in which small episodes were depicted under the title &quot;Karma will get you&quot;, in which the protagonists&#039; misbehavior was punished by &quot;karma&quot; in everyday life.<br \/>\nThe presentation concluded with a <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/234674078\">Performance by the rap group<\/a>, which also dealt with justices, such as the right to education, and injustices, such as biased teachers in schools.<\/p>\n<p>Parallel to the final presentation, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.u18.org\/willkommen\/\">U18 election<\/a> The seminar took place at the wannseeFORUM. In preparation, campaign videos from the various parties were shown each morning during the plenary sessions. At midday, participants had the opportunity to learn more about the party platforms, the Wahl-O-Mat (a voting advice application), and the German party system. With a voter turnout of 851 participants, we received the following results from the seminar participants:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12396\" src=\"https:\/\/wannseeforum.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Absolut-SV-300x211.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wannseeforum.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Absolut-SV-300x211.png 300w, https:\/\/wannseeforum.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Absolut-SV-1024x720.png 1024w, https:\/\/wannseeforum.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Absolut-SV-768x540.png 768w, https:\/\/wannseeforum.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Absolut-SV.png 1531w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, before the grand closing buffet and the obligatory party, a mock student council meeting was held, in which the respective workshop groups discussed proposals they had previously prepared. With students taking on the roles of parent and teacher representatives, as well as the meeting chair, arguments were gathered, votes were taken, and a decision was ultimately made as to whether the proposals would be forwarded to the school conference. The participants left the meeting feeling successful and with renewed confidence in achieving more at their schools.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar concluded on Sunday with each workshop group summarizing how the theme of justice had resonated with them throughout the week and what they would take back to their schools. Thus, the 2017 student council retreat ended with new ideas, increased self-confidence, new friendships, and fresh perspectives on what justice means, or could mean, in schools.
