The pandemic continues. At the end of January 2022, the restrictions on seminars due to the Covid-19 situation were even tightened once again. However, the hope remained strong that we would soon be able to fully enjoy and live out freedom as a fundamental human right in a democracy. What freedoms will we have at the beginning of the year: privately, professionally? – we asked ourselves this question back in August 2021 while planning the photography and film seminar for volunteers in the cultural sector during their social year in Berlin – and made this question the seminar theme: „What’s possible? Freedom 22.“ The seminar team and 23 participants ventured to explore this question – with approximately half of the participants attending in person at the wannseeFORUM and the other half online at their computers.
Many questions about freedom we may not have asked ourselves before Corona, or perhaps we asked them differently:
What does freedom mean in practical terms for each individual in pursuing their own interests and needs? Where does it end in a democratic society? What topics and societal aspects are connected to the fundamental question of freedom and its limits – and what images are associated with it?
The FSJK elective seminar invited participants to develop their own stories, perspectives, and viewpoints together.

Despite challenging conditions – such as restrictive hygiene measures at the wannseeFORUM, internet outages in Steglitz-Zehlendorf, and hardware and software malfunctions – three parallel workshops produced fantastic and diverse works. The analog black-and-white photography and film workshop took place at the wannseeFORUM. The digital photography/film workshop was conducted entirely online. Participants met online periodically for discussions, presentations, and evaluations.

The seminar was a collaboration with the State Association for Cultural Education Berlin and took place as part of the collaboration in the program „Civic youth education in the AdB“ in the project group „Digital Media and Democracy“ instead. It was funded by the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family
