“#homebase”: What makes a house a home? This was the question posed by BilderBewegungBerlin in 2018. Seeking photographic answers, 23 young people, some with and some without refugee experience, came to the wannseeFORUM from July 21st to 28th. Traveling from Berlin, Brandenburg, Baden-Württemberg, Hamburg, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Schleswig-Holstein, they brought diverse perspectives due to their varying ages, backgrounds, experiences, and other factors. The result was a diverse collection of photography-based works employing a range of artistic techniques.
All participants kicked off BBB18 with a "homebase lab": In the "Pixel-Home" station, a house with a garden was created from numerous sticky notes exploring the concept of home. BilderBewegungBerlin also means: photographic experiments, here cyanotype on the question "What can you hold/touch at home?"
The three workshop groups—black and white photography, digital photography, and film photography— discussions about what being at home and the concept of homeland means to each individual. The flipchart from the film photography workshop visualizes the exchange on the question of visions for home—along with "Roots" and "Re-Start," one of the three categories of the nationwide project "eye_land: homeland, flight, photography" /eye-land.org , all of which served as inspiration for the exchange on "home base." Peter Liedke also presented the project on-site for BBB18's cooperation partner, the German Children's and Youth Film Center.
Participants also received inspiration for developing their own visual concepts through excursions, including one on Sunday to various exhibitions in Berlin, such as the tour of the University of the Arts. Further trips to Berlin followed – in line with the developed concepts and for exploring the city together.
The ideas ranged from staged scenes to street photography and were further developed and implemented in the following days under scorching heat:
Experimenting with light and sun for a photo filmproject,
write and record your own texts for a photo film,
Exercises with the analog camera in the black and white photography workshop,
Viewings of self-developed films,
Experimenting with settings in the digital photography
and intensive work on each individual image up to the presentation.
On the penultimate day of BBB18, the BilderBewegten 2018 group presented their “#homebase” works to guests.
The event kicked off with an exhibition by the Black and White Photography workshop group.

The BilderBewegungBerlin 2018 (Image Movement ) took place in the heat of this year's Berlin summer, and many moving images will remain from "#homebase". Some will soon be available to view again at "eye_land: heimat, flucht, fotografie" /eye-land.org .
