@connecting Berlin

A collaborative project with ABC Hüll on journalistic work in the globalized media society:

The sheer volume of news in image, video, and text form is almost impossible to grasp. Even in Berlin, a city steeped in history, political power, and diverse cultures, news is produced and consumed daily. How does journalism function in a globalized world where anyone with internet access can contribute their voice to news production, and how does that voice become audible? How do "traditional" and "grassroots" journalism operate in the age of social media and discussions about freedom of expression and freedom of the press? What challenges do established and emerging media players face in light of questions about media credibility, influence, interests, and power?

Interview with Alex Mänz
Interview with Alex Mänz on Deutsche Welle, “Media Policy and Public Affairs”

The participants of the "Connecting" project embarked on a quest for answers in Berlin through discussions with experts, excursions, and their own journalistic media work. This included a tour of Deutsche Welle and discussions with Alex Mänz, responsible for "Media Policy and Public Affairs," and with Hanne Kehrwald, an editor who, among other things, contributed to the production of the documentary "My Escape." Leonie Geiger, editor of the Berliner Gazette and winner of the Alternative Media Prize in 2010, provided further insights into journalistic work. She also shared her experience as an editor with the participants by supporting them in their practical media projects.

Photos, films, audio, and text contributions have been created and are still being developed, which the Connecting media creators are gradually publishing on their project blog, connecting.abc-huell.de . The blog originated in previous workshops at the ABC Education and Conference Center in Drochtersen-Hüll near Hamburg, with which the wannseeFORUM has long collaborated in a project group within the AdB program "Political Youth Education ." "@connecting: Media City Berlin" was a new collaborative project for both educational institutions, which is to be further developed in 2017.
For the young people and adults aged 16 to 27 who worked together at the wannseeFORUM from May 26 to 29, 2016, the project continues at ABC Hüll with new workshops and article productions incorporating the input and materials from Berlin. News can be found at connecting.abc-huell.de as well as on the connecting Facebook and Twitter pages.

More information about the journalistic media project for participants with refugee experience and young people who grew up in Germany, and the cooperation between wannseeFORUM and ABC Hüll, can be found at abc-huell.de
