Almost everyone in the room at the start of the FSJK seminar had a smartphone and followed Instagrammers and YouTubers, or even posted their own photos and videos on publicly accessible social media accounts. But what makes a photograph or film stand out from the flood of images? Why do certain images capture our attention? How does one develop a personal visual language that allows them to tell individual perspectives, attitudes, ideas, and stories? In the photography and film workshops of the seminar "Instagramable?", volunteers in the Social Year of Culture/Berlin (FSJK) explored their own answers in a hands-on way with cameras, tripods, microphones, and other equipment from February 3rd to 8th, 2020.
The conception of individual projects and the playful exploration of camera settings, image composition, sound recordings, and more resulted in a diverse range of works through intensive discovery and exchange. Some of these projects moved away from the theme of "Instagrammable?" and focused instead on participants' own questions about image quality and narrative possibilities. These works were presented at the final presentation on the last day of the seminar at the wannseeFORUM. Many participants have also made their work available online: enjoy!
