This time, the film seminar of the Queen Louise Foundation at the wannseeFORUM focused on filmmaking at a distance. From August 31st to September 5th, 12 students explored what it means to develop and implement film ideas under the current circumstances.
At the start of the seminar, all participants received a thorough briefing on the pandemic-related hygiene regulations, including a tour of the premises to familiarize
themselves with the layout and traffic flow. Soon, however, the focus shifted to the main topic: teaching and practicing the tools of filmmaking. Shot sizes, camera perspective, camera movements, and dialogue framing and their effects were examined. How does film work with the emotions of its viewers? How can this be implemented in one's own film? And how does all of this work with the minimum distance of 1.5 meters and other restrictions?
For the 2020 theme "Black, White, Colorful," stories and storyboards were created. This was followed by filming and learning how to use editing software in post-production – always maintaining social distancing, yet still collaborating. Another important topic was dealing with third-party material, specifically copyright (film music) and the right to one's own image. The collaborative process resulted in two short films, which were presented to guests and sparked lively discussions.
One outcome is that everyone involved wants to continue the collaboration between the Queen Louise Foundation and the wannseeFORUM in a film seminar in 2021 – meaning: to be continued…
