Cooperation seminar for multipliers in the field of youth education with the University of Bremen (Department 08 Political Science and its Didactics) and the Federation of German Catholic Youth (BDKJ-Fulda).
Financial crisis, banking crisis, debt crisis, euro crisis, economic crisis… who can still make sense of it all? 30 prospective teachers and young people from extracurricular youth work came together at the wannseeFORUM from November 11th to 14th, 2014, to exchange information about the various crisis phenomena and discuss questions about how to communicate them to young target groups.
The global financial crisis, which began in 2007 as a subprime mortgage crisis in the US, has led to significantly weakened economic growth or recession almost everywhere in the world. People worldwide are protesting, in particular, against the emergency bailouts of globalized capitalism involving immense sums of public loans: The upheavals in the modern economy raise questions about a change in the global economic order.
What does this mean for political education? The didactic challenge lies in the fact that crises often appear too complex or abstract; in addition, the necessary expertise for independent assessment is frequently lacking. At the same time, however, engaging with crises opens up a space for developing solutions and alternatives.
The seminar aimed twofold: firstly, to develop individual approaches to the subject matter, and secondly, to create concepts for participants' own pedagogical work. Traditional methods of text analysis and short presentations were employed, as well as simulations more commonly associated with extracurricular education. Accordingly, the overarching theme was the fruitful collaboration between formal and non-formal education in the teaching and learning area of economics.
