Students from the Sophie-Brahe, Elsa-Neumann , and Röntgen high schools explored the following questions in our seminar: What is respect? How is respect experienced at our school? How can I contribute to ensuring that I and others experience more respect at my school?
During this seminar week, the students from the three schools had the opportunity to explore what respect actually means to them. Various facets of this broad topic were examined, particularly the students' perspectives on how students respect each other, how students are respected by teachers, and vice versa.
In five parallel workshops, participants engaged intensively with the concept of respect. The workshop groups tested the newly learned media to varying degrees.
Seminar results
In their cartoons, the workshop group depicts various situations they themselves or people around them have experienced where respect was not (well) practiced. They touch on topics such as ableism, racism, and classism, sometimes exaggerating them and criticizing how such situations are handled.
Especially when setting up and designing their projects, the Kinetic Art group had to grapple with the concept of respect. A nudge here or a wobble there can quickly trigger an unfortunate chain reaction, bringing the entire setup back to square one. Therefore, the group repeatedly addressed how respect and teamwork can be practiced even in stressful situations with differing needs.

The theatre workshop spent the week working on a play that showed how the young people felt they were treated unequally and disrespectfully by adults and teachers. Racism by teachers played a major role in the play.
The rap group individually explored their own thoughts and experiences on the topic of respect. They conveyed their findings in short, relatable verses and music.

In the linocut group, posters on the theme of respect were created. Haikus and short writing and printing exercises also helped them explore their feelings, thoughts, and boundaries regarding respect.
Many thanks to all the students for their commitment. We hope that they can use what they have learned to bring about changes in their schools.
