Under the motto "Pimp my school", the network for the support of Berlin student representatives invited guests to an evening by the fireplace at the wannseeFORUM on November 27, 2017.
Students, teachers, and members of various organizations from the network discussed various topics with each other and with two members of the Berlin House of Representatives: June Tomiak (The Greens) and Dr. Maja Lasić (SPD). Both are their parties' education policy spokespeople and, based on their experience with schools and student council work, knew exactly what they were talking about. Jan Bergner moderated the fishbowl discussion.
The initial question was what framework and approaches we need on the path to a democratic school culture and active student representation. Among other things, the question of funding options for student council projects was raised. The desire was expressed that the student council should be provided with its own funding and, for example, be involved in the school's internal budget allocation process. The State Student Committee (LSA) reiterated its demand that students should also have a say in the development of the curriculum frameworks.
Finally, the discussion turned to more fundamental questions about breaking down hierarchical structures in schools to improve student participation and make the school a more democratic place.
These and many other points were discussed and debated, examined from various perspectives, and taken away as food for thought as the evening drew to a close. There was still much to discuss at the subsequent buffet late into the night. We thank June Tomiak, Maja Lasić, and all the guests for their ideas and arguments in support of the student council's work. We look forward to continued good cooperation and seeing you again soon.
