Student mentor seminars 2017:
What does it mean to take on responsibility? This core question is a recurring theme in the training seminars for prospective and current student mentors that the wannseeFORUM has been offering regularly for the past seven years. This year, two seminars were held, with a total of nearly 100 young people from eight Berlin schools, representing, as always, a welcome and diverse mix of school types, age groups, prior experiences, and neighborhoods (from Dahlem to Buch, from Kreuzberg to Hohenschönhausen).
The participating Berlin students look after the new seventh graders at their schools; the mentors ease their transition into the new school and this new phase of their lives, providing support and guidance. In seminars at the wannseeFORUM, the young people were prepared for this responsible task again this year: through training in communication, group leadership and conflict resolution, team building, anti-discrimination exercises, and, last but not least, the joint organization of leisure and evening activities.

For the first time this year, colleagues from our cooperation partner LIFE eV. were present to introduce their project "ADAS – Contact Point for Protection Against Discrimination in Schools ." Should the young people encounter discrimination at school or while carrying out their responsibilities, they now know of a contact point they can turn to for advice and support.
The next round of student mentor seminars is scheduled for the first half of 2018. Many participants have expressed a desire to take part again next year. As current mentors, they can then pass on their experiences to the new ones.
