5th Wannsee Workshop, November 20-25, 2017:
"Thou shalt not toe the line!" – it was no coincidence that this slogan appeared on the slate board in the Green Salon, the art space of the wannseeFORUM, at the end of November. The theme of this year's wannseeWERKSTATT, from November 20th to 25th, was "Traces," and the nearly 50 participating young people explored traces of all kinds during the artistic workshop seminar: traces in the snow or sand, traces of historical events, invisible traces left by influential people or events within us – or indeed, the verb "to trace," the tension between staying on track and straying from it.
In 2017, the annual wannseeWERKSTATT once again offered art-loving ninth-grade students a welcome opportunity to engage intensively with an artistic medium away from the everyday school routine, thereby getting to know art, themselves, and others better. Students from the Bettina-von-Arnim-School in the Märkisches Viertel district met with students from the Kurt-Schwitters-School in Prenzlauer Berg, and the two school groups bonded well over the course of the week.
This year's artistic program included workshops in experimental film (led by Katja Pratschke), painting and drawing (Felix Pestemer), comics (Tobias Deicke), circus theater and acrobatics (Angelika Jost), and sculpture (Markus Zimmermann). In these parallel workshops, participants developed their own unique approaches to the seminar theme "Traces" and translated their artistic explorations into diverse artworks, films, and performances. Following a long-standing tradition, the results of the workshop work were presented publicly at the wannseeFORUM at the end of the seminar. A gratifying number of guests from Berlin's central district and the far north of the country made their way to Wannsee to experience the final exhibition – well-deserved recognition for the young artists who had dedicated themselves so wholeheartedly to their artistic endeavors. The successful collaboration with the two schools will continue next year.
