From June 29th to July 3rd, the third and final student mentor training seminar of the year took place. A total of 39 students from the Hufeland School, the Carl-Friedrich-von-Siemens Gymnasium , and the Wilma-Rudolph High School met at the wannseeFORUM to prepare for their role after the summer holidays: They will support the new seventh graders during the exciting transition to secondary school and be reliable contacts for them throughout the entire school year.
During the opening plenary session, the students present discussed the role and responsibilities of peer mentors: Should peer mentors serve as role models and therefore demonstrate good academic performance? Should peer mentors present school life in a positive and motivating light, or are they allowed to point out problems within the school? In the three mixed-school small groups, the participants were then tasked with imparting the core competencies for their future roles. Moderation and communication training, game leadership coaching, conflict resolution strategies, anti-discrimination training, and project planning and management are typically part of the content of the five-day professional development seminar. However, the workshop groups are not based on a rigid training program, but rather on process-oriented modules. The focus in this seminar session was therefore on in-person training and team building.
Despite the high summer temperatures, which were more conducive to swimming and water fights than working, each workshop group presented exciting results on the last day of the seminar. The wannseeFORUM wishes all participants every success in their work as student mentors!
