Strengthening the capacity for utopia: How do we want to live?

Topic seminar
focus
Digitalization and democracy
In our seminars, we aim to strengthen the capacity for utopian thinking:
Engaging with ideas and options for action on an individual and societal level can strengthen conscious action as responsible, democratic citizens and digital citizens – in the merging physical and virtual space.

Studies like the "Youth Study Germany 2024" or on the "Future of Values" reveal anxieties and hopes for the future, which we address in our seminars. These include the rapid pace of technological development. Science fiction series and films predominantly depict dystopias. What do we not want? Or rather: HOW DO WE WANT TO LIVE?

"The greater the role of the internet and digital technologies in society, the more important it is that citizens develop knowledge and a well-founded understanding of these technologies in order to continue living self-determined lives in a digitized society,"states the thesis of the Weizenbaum Report 2023, "Political Participation in Germany." For the first time, this regular study surveyed respondents' attitudes toward digital offerings. A relatively large proportion, approximately 30 percent, indicated a neutral stance toward artificial intelligence. Other studies also reveal a skeptical view of AI and a lack of knowledge about algorithms and related technologies as a prerequisite for responsible use and (digital) participation.

From smartwatches while jogging to real or fake news in our feeds: algorithms influence our everyday lives everywhere. With constant internet access in our pockets, we explore the world, seek explanations for everyday problems, and form opinions on global affairs—and our vision of the future. While chat apps like GPT or digital vacuum cleaners take work off our hands, the question arises: what interests, power structures, and distribution networks are embedded in smart devices and AI applications?
What constitutes humanity and human intelligence, which informs our decisions regarding the use and design of algorithms and artificial intelligence—today and in the future? How do we want to shape the relationship between humans and machines so that digitalization enables a livable, inclusive, and democratic coexistence?
