Looking back: Artistic workshop seminar with the Bettina-von-Arnim-School, November 22-27, 2015
A week full of transformations: For the third year in a row, at the end of November 2015, art-loving middle school students from the Bettina-von-Arnim-School in the Märkisches Viertel district were guests at the wannseeFORUM to develop and implement artistic projects in intensive workshops over six days. This year's "wannseeWERKSTATT" revolved around metamorphoses: the transformations of things, people, materials, and states of being.
The "Experimental Film" workshop group (led by Katja Pratschke) transformed the wannseeFORUM's Landhaus , the former Joergers banker's villa, into a haunted house. The result was a mystery and horror short film in which past and present merge in a disturbing way. The participants in the "Scenic Image" workshop (led by Muriel Nestler), on the other hand, transformed themselves through costumes, makeup, and image projections, staging a unique "bedtime story": What would happen if the children of leading world politicians were to make policy themselves—on Mars? Finally, in the "Painting/Drawing" workshop (led by Felix Pestemer), the nine easels of the participating young people became the stage for a variety of metamorphoses: fruits that turn into butterflies, a book whose pages learn to fly, and a series of impressive hybrid creatures—to name just a few examples. The results from the workshops were presented in a public final presentation at the end of the seminar.
However different the individual workshops were in their results and working methods, the exploration of atmospheres and states was central to all the participating art forms, whether in moving or still images – as well as the question of how these moods can be manipulated and changed. One participant reported after the seminar that she had learned "that you can create an atmosphere with different elements and then change everything again with a single movement" – an experience that will accompany the students in their further artistic work, both at school and beyond.
The next wannseeWERKSTATT is planned for November 2016 and will take place for the first time in collaboration with students from the Kurt-Schwitters-Oberschule . The Bettina-von-Arnim-Schule will be guests at the wannseeFORUM again beforehand: with their advanced art courses as part of the 11th kunstFORUM in February 2016.
